Suicide Is Painless

Robin Diaz looks down at his arch rival lying on a stretcher. Johnny Dawson is bloody, covered in mud, blown apart, still breathing. The two hated each other in school. Both were bullies: Johnny chubby and awkward; Robin charismatic and smart. Now, Johnny is a soldier; Robin a Medical Evacuation Pilot. Robin takes a pen knife nicking Johnny’s jugular. Two men jump on the helicopter, removing the stretcher. Robin has won their long contest. He is a hero in Vietnam, a Dustoff Pilot. He and his crew have saved hundreds of lives; they will save hundreds more.
