Urmila’s Monologue

De Soumik

My lord

My love

My life

My Lakshmana

Your exile

Your vigil

Is so blessed

That mine appears

Just a little

You asked for fourteen years

Sleeplessness

How hard

How harsh

And the Nidra Devi

Granted it with pleasure

You prayed for my numbness

My hibernation

My aestivation

I take it with equal pleasure

One thing more

Give me the patience

Give me the power

That I can

Pass the years

Not with you

But only with your dreams.

According to Hindu myth Urmila, the wife of Lakshmana in The Ramayana, slept for fourteen years as blessed by the Nidra Devi, the Goddess of Sleep, during the period of voluntary exile of her husband with his elder brother and sister- in - law, Rama and Sita.
