Heaven on Earth A small white cloud Separated from whole Wandering in the vast sky In search of divine In the arms of Mother Nature The very basis of my stature I wandered in the Tirumala hills, in Tirupati The temple city of Andhra Pradesh of India A biodiversity hot spot Greenery around this nature’s cot Sapthagiri, the seven peaks of Tirumala hills Representing the seven heads of Adisesha[1] The divine serpent, holding the universe The Venkateshwara temple, facing east Present on the seventh peak Constructed over a time, Starting from three hundred AD The most pivotal landmark of Hindu mythology Dedicated to Lord Vishnu[2] The Venkateshwara temple of Tirumala hills Lord Vishnu manifested himself on the earth In the Kali age[3] In this temple in stone image To save mankind from troubles Guiding them towards the salvation stage In the Sanctum Sanctorum The Anand Nilayam[4] Stands the black idol of Vishnu Tall, magnificent, smiling Decorated with flowers and ornaments Goddess Lakshmi[5], his consort Residing in his chest An access to human emotions Chanting of Govinda Govinda[6] in the air Creating vibrations of divinity everywhere Eternal energy emitting from the half covered eyes The matchless beauty scattered here Bending my knees before the Lord A strength to stand firm I got A feeling of humility and gratitude I hold
The glowing Aarati flame[7] Awakens my inner flame Pain and happiness merge This is the heaven on earth And my soul’s rebirth. 2. The Destiny Arrival of the spring A new hope in the swing And I walked alone, in a forest wing A sacred ancient peepal[8] tree Branches extending free Wide girth, resting on earth Sun rays peeping through the green leaves A creeper climbing up and around in search of divinity The life’s mysterious beauty Heart joyous, a blessed abode The nature has bestowed Therapeutic for mind and soul I felt the part of whole My life is blessed, I behold Blessed are many lives Many are shattered kinds Diverse destinies on the earth arise I am alive today, will die tomorrow, and born again Birth and death, the two shores of the sea of life terrain Body, a boat, harbours the soul Reaching the death shore Body drowns The soul escapes with the essence of life, the KARMAS[9] Soul with the KARMAS Chooses the parents The three sets of KARMAS In perfect alignment A strange fusion The destiny of next birth charted Opportunities galore on earth To improve your worth The journey of self-discovery The purpose of birth and rebirth The soul has innate capacity To rise through the dark clouds Through the wildest storms Of emotions and worldly desires Like a lotus, growing in mud Not touched by muddy water Rises pure and sparkle Perform good KARMAS Elevate the consciousness Reach the awakened state The enlightened Budha State[10] Then no more births No more bodies The soul is free

[1] Adishesha: Adi* the first, Shesha* the serpent. A large snake, the king of snakes. As per Hindu mythology the whole universe rests on the head of this six-headed snake. [2] Lord Vishnu: One of the Trinity God, the preserver of Universe in Hindu mythology. The other two are Brahma and Shiva. [3] Kali age: One of the cycle of Four World ages; the present age we are living in. The Worst age, full of conflicts and sin. The other three ages are- Satya yug, Treta yug and Dvapar yug. Yug means age. [4] Anand Nilayam (means the abode of happiness): Glittering gold plated tower over the entrance gate to a temple precinct. [5] Goddess Lakshmi: Goddess of wealth and purity [6] Govinda: Another name of Lord Vishnu. Means Cowherd and protector of cows. Govinda or Lord Krishna is the complete incarnation of Vishnu [7] Arati flame: A Hindu religious ritual of worship in which light- the flame is offered to the deity. An expression of love, benevolence, gratitude, prayers [8] Peepal Tree: Ficus religiosa, sacred fig, also called Bodhi tree. An exceptional medicinal tree. God like figure in Indian mythology. [9] Karma: The result of person’s actions and deeds; as well as actions themselves. [10] Budha State: The awakened state, the enlightened state of mind.
Dr Chanchal Sarin retired as Associate Professor from University of Delhi. She authored seven books on Genetics and Biology besides several articles on research and popular science. She has also contributed to some important Anthologies published in last two years. She has been involved in various scientific and welfare organisations for promoting welfare of women and children. She always endeavoured to create interest among students and young generations to serve the community to eliminate ignorance and increase scientific temperament. She is living with her husband in Gurugram. Their daughter and son, both medical doctors, are settled in U.K.
