FLOOD OR FAMINE?

Downstream at Chub's farm, the flood generously provided:

- fertiliser from the blood and bones of drowned stock, plus the bounty of countless split and

spilled bags of superphosphate from wealthy neighbours;

- a generous iron replenishment from rusted tools and machinery dumped in drains annually;

- a gratifying topsoil wash-away from other farms, fortuitously landing in Chub’s ‘lake’,

- assorted seeds sprouting as his ‘lake’ shrunk — clover, lucerne, rye grass, wheat, beans, and

barley.

Chub’s eternal prayer was answered… a bumper hay crop.

Of course, he wouldn't be crediting any other for his windfall.

Secretly, Chub chuckled…

He'd ‘lucked out’ at last.

Christine Larsen is a writer, farmer, wife, mother, grandmother and rescuer extraordinaire of children (human and the knitted toy variety), plus countless animals, for more than seven decades. Always a creator, her passion for some years has been copious amounts of writing of genres including memoir, flash fiction/non-fiction and short-shorts, children's stories—and now her butterfly brain flutters around poetic fields, affording much pleasure as well as the regular blood, sweat and tears the hard taskmaster (the writing muse) demands of her chosen.
