DRAFTY TODAY, HUH?

A

word

prompt

challenges

and inspires

a draft, a story,

the germ growing,

flourishing, expanding,

Uh-oh, over the word limit,

pruned, and edited, and edited,

and tweaked, rewritten, ad nauseum,

Tiny masterpiece created in an artist's mind.

Grand indeed when the fertile seed, swells, bursts,

shoots away upwards, sideways, in directions undreamed.

'It's only a draft,' I tell myself, 'and already it's wondrous,

a gem of imagining, a truth the world needs to hear.

I'm the one to share the news, without prejudice,

in dulcet, loving tones, totally devoid of fear.

Politically incorrect? Bah! Write it anyway.

Audience won't welcome home-truths?

Unafraid of critics, I'll show, not tell it,

chapter and verse… all the way.

Applauding myself… brilliant!

Truly? Tell myself a LIE?

Well, hardly ever!

Almost never.

Who, me?

Really?

Not

I.

Christine Larsen is a writer, farmer, wife, mother, grandmother and rescuer extraordinaire of children (human and the knitted toy variety), plus countless animals, for more than seven decades. Always a creator, her passion for some years has been copious amounts of writing of genres including memoir, flash fiction/non-fiction and short-shorts, children's stories—and now her butterfly brain flutters around poetic fields, affording much pleasure as well as the regular blood, sweat and tears the hard taskmaster (the writing muse) demands of her chosen.
